Tuzki Bunny EmoticonMan claims Bronte portrait find (UK)

An art collector claims he has uncovered a rare portrait of the Bronte sisters painted by one of Britain's most famous Victorian artists.

James Gorin von Grozny, from Devon, paid £150 for the work which he believes was painted by Sir Edwin Landseer in 1838.

  1. From the image it's fair to say this portrait, if not by Landseer, is by a very accomplished artist. If they're not the famous three, who else could they be? Charlotte has the peculiar crooked mouth and bent nose, Emily seems to have the famous 'compressed mouth and protruding front tooth' and Ann, as ever, is 'lost in dreams'. There heights and ages look right too. Unless it's a forgery, at face value this looks right to me.

  2. Sorry, I've been a little behind on comments! I did notice though that the girls in the picture painted by the Bronte sisters' brother look very similar to the ones in this disputed one. The dresses look about right for what their economic status would have been too, i think...unless it is a forgery, like you said! :)

  3. Hi oy, James here. 'Christina' commentator on the Bronte Blog said the dresses were 'all wrong'. I found description of their clothing from an 87y/o woman who knew them, they wore the same; 'light colours, narrow waists, high collars and full sleeves.' Emily liked greens, browns and rustic colours, Charlotte lilacs and purples, Ann preferred creams and blues. Thank you Sunny & Hannah for defending the fantastic, info packed new picture.
